pet industry hits growth spurt

Exports of pet products have grown nearly 7 percent
In these times of recession is difficult to find a sector of the economy that is not touched, and more, one that is growing at a gallop.
The industry devoted to the more than 20 million pets that exist in our country is one of those
exceptions. This business, which includes products ranging from pharmaceutical to food, through the health,
fashion and accessories, generated sales of almost 1,000 million euros and has turned Spain into a global benchmark for volume production.
Propet as a prelude to the Fair for the Professional Pet Industry IFEMA starting today, its
organizers have released the latest figures available from the sector. According to the Spanish Business Association Industry Animal Health and Nutrition, total sales
of this segment stood at 975.13 million euros in 2009 (drug and biological products for pets are more than 50 percent of sales .) Thanks to this 'boom', Spain and is the seventh largest exporter, with a growth of 6.8 percent over last year
(about 250.77 million euros).
A global phenomenon
But the
upward trend is not confined to our country. According to the latest data from the International Federation for Animal Health (IFAH), the
health industry and animal nutrition has increased its worldwide sales to reach 14,100 million euros in turnover in the last year. Leading this growth is in Europe with a turnover of 5.235 million euros, followed by the USA and
Canada, with 4.636 million; Asia, with 2.175 million, and Latin America, with 1,660 million.
The good performance of recent years, coupled with growth opportunities, has led to this year's
Propet increase its exhibition space and exhibitor participation by almost 13 percent (105 exhibitors and over 200 participating companies eighteen countries). Since the previous edition, the fair organized by IFEMA and the Madrid Association of
Veterinarians for Animal Company had managed to increase the number of participating companies and the attendees (a total of 11,348).
Aimed at all professionals in the care of pets, from which are devoted to health and beauty of
the animals to those who develop and sell pharmaceutical products and health-Propet this edition will focus on training, with intense days for trainers, breeders, animal rights, hairdressers and veterinary assistants.
